Cooking with the Captain

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce a new, somewhat regular, feature on my blog - "Cooking with the Captain".

Ya'll may remember my good friend Pines Grand Fortescue from this post a couple of months back. Every so often we get together and cook something crazy. Well, not necessarily crazy, more something that takes hours and hours to make, requires at least 2 hands and feet worth of counting to get all the fixings and usually has some sort of outrageous ingredient involved (this time it was illegal cheese! Well, it's only recently become legal but it's a lot more exciting to say illegal).

It is one of my favourite things to do and we always have a blast. So I thought I'd share the love.

The latest foray into culinary delight took place on Saturday and boy did we have some fun. On the menu were:
  • Goats cheese and asparagus quesadillas with tomato jam and coriander yoghurt and
  • Calamari and blackened tomato soft corn tacos with salsa verde

Hot damn they were delicious.

And since cooking is such thirsty work we treated ourselves to:
  • Watermelon mojitos
  • Pineapple chili margaritas
  • Tequila and sangrita
  • Tamarind and chipotle magaritas and
  • Assorted beers

A truly fantastic time was indeed had by all.

White Hot and a Winner

Remember yesterday how I said it was hot? Yeah. It still is. Hot. Yup. Hotter even. Yep. Hot hot hot.

It's like walking around in a swimming pool only it's not refreshing and the swimming pool is the air. That's what it's like.

I am sweating all over. Wanna know specifically where I am sweating? Probably not, cuz it's gross. But I'm going to tell you anyway. I am sweating in my elbow creases. In my elbow creases guys. This is not right.

On an unrelated note I have chosen the winner of my give away!

Paolina of Calur Villade! Because her suggestion totally made me laugh out loud. So congratulations Paolina! Email me your mailing address and an antelope, a wolf and a squirrel will be on their way to you shortly.

Summer Time and the Living is Steamy

Uh oh. It got hot.

What is this, summer or something?  And what I think is hot right now is nothing on the usual temperature for this time of year.

As an aside, how long is my hair getting? Is it time to see Katie again?

Man, you can tell it's hot. I'm only wearing 3 things!

Yays!

I've lost count of how many times I've laughed today (and it's only 1pm as I write this).

Whether from awesome and unexpected feedback (thanks!), creepy Christmas cards (you know who you are, Boozeman) or silly things on the internet, today has been a veritable barrel. I love it!

Between all of that I have searched the internet for tips on how to boil the perfect egg (I always end up either with something I could use to play basketball or a slightly warm, agitated raw egg), the best way to use peaches in the salad for dinner tonight (mmmm corn) and which celebrity would be my best friend (Hi Natalie Portman!)

It appears I have also reached my bracket quota for the week (and potentially my link one too). I like today!!

Colour Me

This wasn't what I was going to wear today. But I did. Wear it. And I'm glad I did. Wear it. I think.

You see the iPhone weather app told me that it was going to be cold, grey and rainy. Much like it has been for the last week. So when I got up this morning I slipped on a floral dress and cardigan and felt all nice and snuggly. Then I felt a bit grumpy and then I felt down right warm because it was not cold or grey or rainy*. It may have been grey. OK, it was grey but that's it.

So I removed layer by layer until I felt cooler but was then somewhat indecent. Thus began my 30 second riffling through the clean clothes basket to come up with raspberry and watermelon. If you're gonna be hot summer, I'm gonna dress like a summer fruit. Take that.

*It actually rained the whole time I wrote this post. It seems Summer likes to make a fool out of me. And not just in a bathing suit.

When 5:30am is OK

The conference finished up today. I learned some really interesting stuff.

I also learned that I don't always like to be up at 5:30am. I like to be up at 5:30am if I am on my way to the airport aaaand that's pretty much it. Wait, no, I also like to be up at 5:30am on Christmas. Which is shockingly close by the way. We're talking less than 3 weeks. How did this happen??

Luckily I have all of my presents sorted so now it's just a matter of kicking back and trying not to buy myself anything in the off chance that someone else buys it for me. And really, that's not a bad problem to have.

I Learned Something Today

I was at a conference for work all day yesterday (hence the late post, I pretty much got home and passed out) and I learned a lot of interesting stuff.

The most memorable of the day perhaps is that I like iced tea. I'd never tried iced tea before and I had the Nestea Peach and Mango. Well hot damn. That stuff is delicious.

I also have new shoes. I have special feelings towards them.

Oooh Secrets

Today is my day off so here's something special.

The lovely Snappy Q has tagged me to share 7 secrets about myself. 7 is one of my favourite numbers, so I have a good feeling about this.

I suppose number one should be my name. Though some of you know it already. It's Selise. Pronounced "suh-lease". You'd think it would be pretty straight forward but a lot of people get it wrong. Especially on the phone. Someone called my "Cylinder" once. Ummm no.

Number two, I have a freckle in my eye in the shape of Russia. When I was 10 I used to tell the boys at school that it was a third pupil and gave me x-ray vision.

Number three, I've lived in over 90 houses. Gosh it would be getting up to 100 now. We moved around a lot when I was a kid. Gypsy blood. I wouldn't change those experiences for the world.

Let's see, four, when I was younger I wanted to be an astronaut. Or a radio jockey. You got paid to talk. I could definitely do that.

Number five, I was trampled by 3 camels when I was 9. I broke my humerous bone (I know, I know, it's not funny, believe me) and had the ligaments and tendons torn off my neck and shoulders. Although that was a number of years ago, I've never really forgiven the species.

Number six, I have what I call "intrinsic mall knowledge". You can take me to a mall that I've never been to before and I will know my way around. I'll "know" where the stores are. I know, right? Don't question it, just go with it.

Seven. Seven. Hmmm. Gosh this is hard. I like cooking. A lot. I particularly like chopping vegetables. I cannot be stressed out when I am chopping vegetables. It's like I go into a Zen state. So Zen that I sometime forget to move my finger out of the way when I am chopping but that hasn't happened in a while. OK, it happened tonight. But it was just the tip of my fingernail. That's really not making it any better is it...

OK, now I need to tag 7 others to dish on their secrets. Alright -

Ebony of Ebony and Ivory
Helen of Left and Leaving
Kyla of Blue Collar Catwalk
Yen of My Edit
Kat of Kat's Creations
Ruta of Look Ugly in a Photgraph
And Kimberellie Miss Furnellie.

Miss Cleo

OK, I am calling this my "Jamaican Psychic Outfit". I don't know why but as soon as I tied this in a bow I was suddenly Miss Cleo, telling everyone to "Call now, child".

Seeing as I channelled her outfit, let's see if I can't channel a little of her ESP. Hmmmm. I predict it will continue to rain all summer. Is that a prediction or wishful thinking? I guess time will tell.

So far I am liking summer a lot. It's rained for most of the day and I was really productive. Now The Man is taking me to dinner and the movies. Summertime and the living is easy!

Check Your Shoes at the Door

Phew, what a day. I'm beat. Do I look beat? Because I certainly feel it.

I am also slightly grumpy at certain neighbours decisions to play what can only be described as god awful music. Oh wow. They stopped right as I typed that. I have the power! Lucy, stop moving the football away from Charlie Brown! Did it work?

On another note I may just be in check heaven here. Those of you that know me, know I know no happiness like check mixing. It's a mouthful sure, but oh so true.

The only downfall, and I'm hesitant to even call it that, is that I couldn't find any shoes to match. So I decided to go without. One can do that when one works from home. One cannot, however, when one has reservations at one's favourite Mexican restaurant this evening.
