Sunday Beer & A Better Look At That Dress

I wore the dress on Easter Sunday. You know the dress, the one I could never quite capture right. I'm not even sure these do it justice but hey, pictures, you know?

Remember how I said I should never take pictures at the bar? Well, what if you're at the bar at lunch time? On Easter Sunday? And you only have one beer? Surely nothing can go terribly wrong there, right?

I mean, clearly I'm the very picture of a lady. Right? Right guys??

Ooh La La

Lookin' a little French here, huh? I wonder if it's the scarf or the flower in the hair... are either of those things particularly French? Who knows.

I decided to give the socks another whirl (you know, the ones that left me heartbroken and betrayed last time). And I'm happy to report... I'm not allergic! So brace yourself cuz you're gonna see a whole lot more of them.

Particularly because the weather has finally decided to turn chilly. Yep. As I write this I'm rocking jeans and a torn sweater. That's right, this time the jeans are in tact. Gotta maintain the right torn to untorn ratio you know.

When The Universe Tells You Not To Buy A $445 Dress

And here's what I wore to the wedding.

Initially I found this gorgeous Fleur Wood dress... for $445. Yeah. But after a series of rather, persuasive, messages from the bride (bless ya Em!) I thought, "What the hell, I'll try it on. If it's terrible, then, great. At least I know. And if it's awesome? Well, then I'll have an awesome dress".

Thing is though, when I went back to try it on the next week it was gone. And I don't just mean, my size. Or even that design. Nope, entire label. Gone. (I was in Myer and that whole section of the department was replaced with something else). "Well", I thought to myself, "it's probably just as well. $445 is a lot to drop on a dress." And I went about my merry way.

A couple of days later I decided to check out ModCloth, found this guy, fell head over heels in love and bought it in an instant (I can't wait to pair it with docs, torn tights and a flanno. Nothing but class as far as the eye can see round here).

And wouldn't you know, I was in Myer the very next week... and yep, the whole label was back. Dress and all. I swear it's like the universe conspired to keep me from buying that dress so I'd find this green guy. Either that or it was sale time and they needed the real estate for clearance racks. Guess that's the thing with a higher (sartorial) power. You never know for sure...

The Next Day

So these pictures were taken the day after the night before. You know, Ladies Night? The sock incident? Here, just, look... the day after this.

I guess my legs don't look so bad in these pictures. Hooray for Hipstamatic effects! And you know what? I totally didn't have to rock stockings at the wedding.

The wedding which the Ladies Night and ensuing sock/rash predicament was leading up to...

Um, OK, it might just be me, but that was a lot to follow. Things sorta just got a little convoluted there. Like some sort of sock/party/inception shamble.

Lemme do this instead: I wore this outfit and I liked it. Material Girl much? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Oh, So That's What Happens When You...

OK, so, last Saturday we had a "ladies night" for the outrageously fantastic Emma, who's getting married this weekend! YAY!

And these socks? The socks of my dreams? I found them the day before and decided to bust them out for the special occasion. I was going for a 1940s wartime, underwear, make do and mend vibeDo you see it?

Who am I, Mr Burns? What's going on with my hands here?
Anyway, the night was awesome. I totally loved my outfit and a great time was had by all.

Then Sunday morning rocks around (I'm not even going to touch on how my head was feeling) and as I pour myself out of bed I catch sight of my legs and think, "Hello, what's this?"

This? Was a rash. ALL OVER MY LEGS. Why, socks? WHY????

After much wailing to my friends and gnashing my teeth, I've come to the conclusion that it's because I didn't wash them before I wore them. At least, dear god, I hope that's all it is. Because I cannot accept the idea of being allergic to socks. Sorry. Not gonna happen.

Nice little effect making me look like I've got a massive bruise there. I swear I don't. Mine all congregate around my knees.
So now, with this mega sexy rash and the litany of bruises on my knees from the 35,000 (give or take) push ups we did at training last night - I'm a regular Betty Grable up in here. And with a wedding this weekend... "Oh, hi tights I haven't worn since last year...looking good. Say, wanna go out for a spin on Saturday?"

Give Away!

Well would you look at that! 105 followers! Woohoo!

Alright, so... I've been wanting to do a give away for a while now. And what better occasion than reaching 105 followers?

OK here's how it's going to work:

You tell me in around 25 words or so what you like best about my blog and why.
(It could be my writing style, print mixing, logo, whatever.)

The answer I like best, wins!

And what do you win? A special package!

I'm gonna hit the City this Friday with the specific view of putting together a "you're a winner!" package... chocked full of goodies, just for you (valued at about fifty smackers). Who knows exactly what the contents will be... I'm thinking you'll find some jewellery in there, stationery, maybe a head scarf too. Whatever it is. It's gonna be awesome. That's guaranteed.

So how do you enter? Alright, I'm keeping it simple:

1) You must be a follower of Lovers, Saints & Sailors

2) Post a comment below with your answer and a way for me to contact you

That's it!

And yep, totally open to international readers. Jump on board my foreign friends!

The competition will close Friday 23 March 2012 and I'll announce the winner on Saturday 24 March.

Note: By entering you consent to your comment being used to promote Lovers, Saints & Sailors in future marketing material and websites.

Good luck! I can hardly wait to hear what you guys have to say!

What Up, Size?

I had planned on taking pictures of the size tags in my clothes. Turns out I've cut most of them out. So I took a picture of a tape measure against a rad skull scarf instead. It's practically the same thing, right? (I know, it's totally not. Unless I wanted to get crazy deep and talk about our skeletons and maybe how the media is making us waste away and stuff. But I'm not going to.)

OK, here's how this whole thing came about. The other day I bought a size XS dress.

Actually, wait, that's not entirely how the idea for this post came about. I'm gonna be honest with you guys. And it might be a little embarassing. For me, not you, don't worry.

So...a couple of weeks back I bought some underwear on sale. Same as I always get. (When you find some you like, STOCK UP! Seriously I've got, like, 14 pairs. At least.) Anyway, I always get these in a large, right? (More on that in a minute). So I buy 2 pairs in large. A few days later I go to put a pair of them on and think, "Hmmm, they seem a little smaller than usual". And sure enough, they're a size small.

The swing tag said large but the inside tag said small. Note to self: check both next time!

But what do I do? I've already cut the tags off and washed them. Besides they were down to, like, $1.45 or something ridiculous. So I put them on (I tried writing "popped" and "whacked" but turns out you only ever "put" underwear on). And you know what? They fit.

Now, this is probably not revolutionary to you. In fact, you're probably wondering why I felt the need to broadcast my underwear habits to the world. And believe me! I'd rather not! I'm a private person (aside from posting outfits for the entire world to see, obviously) and generally do not go about dishing on my smalls. But it was one of those "Whoa" moments for me. And I'll tell you why.

Like I said before, I always buy my underwear in large. And same goes for my clothing, I always err on the side of bigger. Mostly this is because I prefer things that "don't touch me" (which is probably partially because I live in Queensland - "Hi, heat and humidity. Why you guys gotta be around all the time?") but if we're being honest, it's also because I think I'm bigger than I am. And it took a pair of size small undies to show me that.

Now back to that size XS dress I bought recently. XS? Yup. I don't know why I even took it into the change room (Actually I do - it was on sale (of course) and the only size there). But it fit. And it looked good. And I bought it.

The thing is, that same month I also bought a pair of jean shorts. Size 16 (also on crazy sale, of course). Which also fit (albeit a touch big but not falling off or anything).

How is it I can fit both an XS and a size 16?

You know how I said I always err on the side of bigger? Well, you know what happens as a result? You wind up believing you're bigger than you actually are.

A drawer full of size 16 shorts makes me think I'm a size 16.

Which I'm not. I know I'm not. But I don't really know, I'm not (you know?)

So I've started doing a little experiment lately. I bring a smaller size into the fitting room. Where I would usually grab a size 12 T-shirt, I grab a size 10. And you know what? Yup, they fit. It's a revelation. It's like all along I had this body and I didn't know.

And what I've taken from this whole thing, and I'd love you guys to as well, is this:

Those tags? Don't matter. Seriously. The only thing they do is assign you a number that you think defines you.

That number? Doesn't mean shit.

If I can be anything from an XS to a 16, then what number am I?

The Housewife

I don't know why, but a shirtdress and a headscarf say housewife to me.

I guess it's not too hard to figure it out. The 50's anyone?

This dress is brilliant but I just haven't managed to get a good photo of it yet. I fell in love when I spotted it across the store (it was totally one of those - "I am buying this whether it fits or not" kinda things. And hallelujah it fits!) and have worn it a few times but nothing quite captures the utter radness.

It's sort of a Mexican/Aztec/70's/80s kinda deal. Intriguing, right? I know. Hold tight, one of these days it'll have it's moment in the sun.

The Consequences Of Socks

A little pose I like to call, "The Flamingo"

Okay okay, I know. Socks, Selise? In summer?

But guys it was cold out! Well, I mean...not legitimately cold. But it was rainy and less than 30 degrees.

And I love these socks! I bought them just before we took off overseas last year. And golly I'm glad I did. Because it was legitimately cold in Seattle. Really, really, legitimately cold. And one day, soon, it will be legitimately cold here too. And I will wear these socks with reckless abandon!

I wonder what that actually entails...wearing socks recklessly. The dictionary says reckless is: without thinking or caring about the consequences of an action. But what are the consequences of socks? Warmth? So I will wear them without caring about warmth? That's kind of what I did here, right? I mean, if socks in summer aren't reckless, I don't know what is.

P.S I would like to take this opportunity to shout "Yippee!" with regard to the following 3 things:

One:
The last day of summer. Hell yeah, autumn! Bring it baby!

Two:
Bonus day. What's up, February 29? Where you been? (Ooh, sub-yippee for the Dinosaur Jr album of that name)

Three:
Reaching 99 followers! You guys, this is exciting! And I (obviously) couldn't have done it without you. So thanks!!!

Give It To Me Straight

Friday. What a great day it was.

I got to spend the day being all crafty (shh, don't tell Smorgan) and then in the evening I got to glam up and hit...the kitchen as it would appear in these photos.

Cuz you see, we were supposed to go out for a birthday dinner (hi Smorgan!!). And so I took the opportunity to dress up, bust out my mad make up skills (which  you totally can't see in these pictures but trust me, mad), straighten the ol' hairoo and pump up some victory rolls.

Only then... The Man came home from a dentist appointment with 2 new fillings and a numb mouth. Which would have made dinner pretty difficult. So we had to skip it.

But I was all dressed up! And make up! And hair!  It's OK, don't worry, we wound up going out for a late, fancy dinner once he was able to do more than drink beer through a straw (classy is a word often bandied about in our household).

Flowers & Fists

You can't tell in these pictures, but I'm not wearing any shoes. Shocking, I know. I mean, being I'm in my own back yard and all...

But don't you wanna know why I'm not wearing any shoes? (Humour me, OK? I know you've got much better things to wonder about than why some girl on the other side of the world isn't wearing shoes in her back yard.)

It's because the cute little innocent looking Mary Janes I wore the day before gave me no less than SIX blisters. Okay, it was exactly six. But still...jerks!

Anyway. These pictures are from Saturday. It was a pretty great day. Started with picking flowers.

And ended with throwing punches.

Black Out

Oh, ASOS. First the bag and now this dress. Be still my beating eyeballs! (Wow, that sort of sounds gross. I just meant cuz the stuff looks good. Ew, sorry.)

But seriously guys, am I right? This dress is adorable! And comfortable and light and sorta sexy in an unexpected way.

I wore it on Friday to traipse around the City (it's a good traipsing dress). Oh, apparently traipse means to move reluctantly. I was going for something with a little more "spring" in it. How about frolic? I wore it on Friday to frolic around the City (it's a good frolicking dress). Yeah, that's better.
